Spotlight on: Lourdes
Bathed in Christian history, Lourdes is the most visited pilgrimage in the Christian world owing to it being the site of a 'Marian' apparition in 1858. The apparitions at Lourdes took place four years after the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, in 1854. On Thursday February 11th 1858, a young girl named Bernadette Soubirous saw a beautiful young girl in a nice at a rocky outcrop called Massabielle, about half a mile outside of the town. Bernadette described the woman near a rose bush, similar to herself in age and height, but clothed in a brilliant white robe, a blue girdle around her waist and a white veil on her head. She was bathed in a beautiful soft white light, surrounded by soft clouds.

According to Bernadette, she beckoned her forward, but Bernadette simply stood in awe until the apparition smiled and vanished from view.
In the following five months after the initial sighting, more sightings were reported and on the sixteenth sighting, the apparition finally revealed herself to be the Blessed Virgin Mary. Bernadette told the local priest to build a small chapel inside a grotto and during one of Bernadette's trances inside the grotto, she began digging into the earth until a small puddle of water appeared. Over the next few days, the puddle enlarged into a pool and eventually became the sacred spring for which Lourdes is so famous.
As more and more pilgrims made their way to the healing spring of Lourdes, news spread far and wide of it's verifiable healing properties.
Nowadays, you can purchase rosaries made of wood, glass and pewter, some of these containing the water from the holy spring.
