Spotlight on: St Malo
A port city in Brittany (Northern France) dates back to the early sixth century when saints Aaron and Brendan settled there. Over the coming centuries it became home to a band of notorious pirate-mariners who for four years seized control of St Malo and declared itself an independent republic. Passing English ships would pay tributes or fear incarceration by the pirates.
Extra wealth was brought from further afield, by Jacques Cartier, who colonised Canada. He lived and sailed from St Malo, as did the first colonists to settle the Falklands - hence the islands Argentinean name (Las Malvinas). Now attached to the mainland, St Malo is one of the most visited islands in Brittany, thanks largely to its superb old citadel.

There are some very unique experiences to be had at St Malo, including the Aquarium Intra Muros offering a treasure of tropical fish or the Labyrinthe du Corsaire, where you and a group of people can explore a magnificent maze, tapering off into four separate routes for your own enjoyment.
There are also museums, the Fort du Petit Be (accessible if the tide is low) and some exceptional views from the old ramparts. Saint Malo is a historic glimpse into the military of old and a fantastic place to visit time and again
