Spotlight on: Cherbourg
Cherbourg is a town in Normandy and was the first territory conquered by the Vikings. Over the centuries, the town evolved into a port and remained a stronghold during the Anglo-French conflicts. After William's victory at Hastings in 1066, the Anglo-Norman state was created which proved to be a decisive factor in the development of Cherbourg, with it's exceptional geographic location.
In 1145 William the Conquerer's granddaughter, Matilda, acquired some of the land and ordered the construction of an abbey dedicated to the Holy Virgin, whose cult was in full flow at the time. The Abbaye du Voeu, of which remains to this day.
During the Second World War, the port was the first entry point for the American soldiers and the first major capture for the American Allied forces in Brittany.Today, Cherbourg is a place of art, shipyards and science. The Thomas Henry art museum is the third largest in Normandy and houses sculptures and paintings ranging from the 15th to the 19th century. The Cite de la mer is a large museum dedicated to the scientific and historical preservation of maritime subjects.

From just walking around, you will see that the harbour, which was restored in 1952 following the bombardments of allied forces during the Second World War.
Cherbourg is perfect for those wishing to enjoy a good day out, or access the ferries running daily to and from the UK, including ports at Southampton, Poole, Portsmouth and Rosslare.
