El Rocio sits on the edge of Andalucia's protected Coto Do-ana national park and the town is witness to a unique pilgrimage. The 'El Rocio' pilgrimage attracts nearly a million people from across Andalucia, Barcelona and the Canary islands not to mention the tourists who travel from abroad, around Europe and even further afield to witness the procession.
The pilgrims come from all over Spain, on horseback, in carriage and ornately covered wagons. They are known as Rocieros and they travel to El Rocio to visit the Ermia de Nuestra Senora (The Church of Our Lady) and pay homage to La Virgen El Rocio (The Virgin of El Rocio)
The town itself spends most of the year in quiet desertion, enjoying visitors and tourists on weekends, but during the pilgrimage, the town turns into a bustling homage to a wild west film set, as decorated carriages pass by the church to receive the blessing.
As this is part of a festival, the pilgrims are in lavish costumes and will relish the tourist attention, showing off their horses and carriages as the rest of the day is spent enjoying good food, drink and time with friends until early into the morning.
